C: Castlevania

Developer: Konami
Game Type: Action/Horror
Difficulty: Hard

This is probably one of the best action/horror games to ever come out on the NES (excluding the 3rd game in the series). This is the very first Castlevania to come out on a console in America, and the Castlevania game that started a massive franchise that goes on till this day.

There are 6 levels in this game, and each one gets progressively more difficult. At the end of each stage is a unique boss fight with somewhat cliché bosses. And then, at the very end, you fight Count Dracula, which is a very difficult battle that will take you several hours to beat your first time though.

The music in this game is some of the best to ever come from the NES. The sound engine that Konami used has great dynamics, which really makes the music sound that much better. The tunes are very rememberable, and some of them are remixed and used in more recent Castlevania games.

Overall, this is one of the best games for the NES. It has a high replay value, and a fun game to try to do a speed run through once you get everything down. This is a must have for any connoisseur of fine NES games.

C: Castlevania II: Simon's Quest

Developer: Konami
Game Type: Action/Adventure/Horror
Difficulty: Hard

Oh god, this Castlevania is pretty annoying. Instead of making it a straight forward whip them up like the previous title, they decided to make it more of an adventure where you have to explore towns and dungeons, collect items, and solve puzzles. Though I like the thought, I really had no clue what I was suppose to do most of the time.

The controls in the game are pretty solid like the previous game and the music is also amazing, but thats pretty much where the good stuff ends. You have to explore a huge area, looking for crystals, collecting Dracula's remains, and avoiding some annoying obstacles. The most annoying of which are the fall through platforms. You will find yourself using your holy water frequently just so that you don't find yourself falling through. There is another part where you have to cross this giant lake by jumping on moving platforms. Every jump must be perfectly timed as well as a pixel perfect jump. I usually just use my laurels and run across it to save myself from the agony.

Another annoying this is that no one in the villages have anything useful to say to you AT ALL. They are only really useful when you need to buy stuff. The most important thing to buy is usually an upgraded whip. There are a lot of other things that you will need to buy. And the currency you use to buy stuff are the hearts that drop off enemies. So, as you can probably guess, there will be a lot of enemy farming just to get enough hearts.

The most annoying this about this game though (something the Angry Video Game Nerd hate just as mush as me) are the transitions between night and day. They pause the game for 10 seconds, maybe more, where you just have to wait for the text to scroll and wait for the screen to change back into day or night... whichever one is next. This waists a lot of time, it cannot be skipped, and ends up pissing you off every time it happens. Another annoying thing is that the towns turn in to ghost towns when its night, so you have to wait until day before you can go there and buy stuff or even rest.

Another really annoying thing is that you usually have absolutely no clue what your suppose to do with the items you have. There are "clue books" hidden throughout the game, but they offer absolutely no help at all. Some of the items are 1 time use only, and if you use it prematurely, you have to go back to town and get another one. And some of them are so obscurely used that it would take you months to figure out (literally months if you don't give up and look for some walkthroughs). And then, after you suffer through all that, figuring what the hell your suppose to do with all the items, You can finally face Dracula! And... it ends up being one of the most anticlimactic fights ever. you just throw your supper daggers at him and he is gone in second.

This game was just bad. And if you decide to play through the game again, you will notice how extraordinarily short it is. The only thing that made this game hard was having absolutely no clue what you were suppose to do. This is a game that even Castlevania fans hate, just because it was so poorly executed. The only way you can make this game fun is if your looking at a walkthrough while playing it, because playing it without any help will just give you a massive headache.
