Articles: Best from the NES: Rockman Rocks!!!

Welcome to "Best from the NES" where I will disclose what I feel is an accurate list of the best things the NES has to offer. In this article, I will be talking about the best Megaman music from the six original NES Megaman games. This wasn't a particularly easy task considering there are 145 different tracks from all six games combined. But, After much deliberation, I have managed to categorize the list as well as narrow down the best of the best in each field. These categories are; Title/Intro Themes, Stage Music, Boss Battle, End Game Stages, Dr. Wily Battle, Prologue, and Overall best tracks.

The reason for categorizing the music is because I felt that some great tracks would fail to be mentioned otherwise. I also wanted to try to have at least one song from each game (though you might notice there is nothing from the first Megaman). But I feel my list is fare to each game. So, with out further delay, Here is my list of the best music that the NES Megaman series has to offer!

+ Title/Intro Music +
This is a top 3 of the best prologue and title screens in the Megaman series. There are two in particular that I would consider among the best songs in the franchise.  I hope you agree.

#3

Megaman 6 Intro and Title Theme:

Really the first game to have a darker tone in its Prologue and Title. Megaman 6's into sets you up perfectly for Megaman's last Battle on the NES.

#2

Megaman 3 Intro:

This into song is just awesome. It starts out jazzy, then moves into an awesome part that pumps you up. Really This is one of those songs that will easily get stuck in your head. The only reason its not #1, look bellow.

#1

Megaman 2 Intro and Title Theme:

How can Megaman 2's title not be number 1 in this list? This is the only song in all of Megaman that I would call Megaman's Theme song. In fact, I was surprised not to hear it in the title of every other game as a kid, because it's that awesome. It pumps you up to kick some robot master ass!

+ Stage Music +

This was a really hard category to narrow down. I wanted to make it a top 8 to represent the traditional number of robot masters, so I had to cut out a lot of great songs. From the 46 robot master stages, I picked 25 that I would consider worthy of the top 8. Then I cut that list down to 14 songs that I would consider to be the best of the best. And from that, I had to make a hard decision on what 8 I wanted to represent the franchise. I am happy with the results.

#8

Knightman (Megaman 6):

Megaman 6 has a lot of songs that are pretty good, but not quite up to par with some previous titles. However, Knightman's stage music is an acceptation to that. easily one of the best songs in the game. This is the tune you will likely walk away with after playing Megaman 6.

#7

Diveman (Megaman 4):

Megaman 4's soundtrack is generally dull compared to the rest of the series. There are only a few songs that stand out as real gems. One of those songs is Diveman's stage music.

#6

Metalman (Megaman 2):

I had a hard time not polluting the entire list with Megaman 2 stage songs. Each one of them is great, and each one is equally notorious for getting stuck in the players head. So naturally, the decision on which of these songs will make the cut was hard. I picked Metalman for two reasons. One, its the most unique of the Megaman 2 soundtrack, and two, it's just too damn catchy.

#5

Waveman (Megaman 5):

I would consider Megaman 5's soundtrack to be one of the most underrated in the franchise. Sure, it isn't generally as great as Megaman 2 or 3, but its not far behind. This particular song is extremely catchy. Its much more mellow then the other tunes listed here, which helps it stand out as one of the best stage songs.

#4

Sparkman (Megaman 3):

Megaman 3 is another game that has an amazing soundtrack. So it was extremely hard to narrow it down to only a couple songs. Sparkman's stage music stands out from the rest because of how awesome the break down is.

#3

Gravityman (Megaman 5):

The longest and most complex Robot Master song. Gravityman's stage music plays for 1 minute and 21 seconds before repeating. It Starts off slow, then picks up into an amazing tune that builds on its self until the break down and transition to the repeat. Its usually overshadowed by Waveman, but I consider this a better song.

#2

Bubbleman (Megaman 2):

The quite the most catchy of the Megaman 2 songs, but easily one of the best. It starts off mellow and builds into an awesome rock song with some of the coolest sweeps in the franchise.

#1

Geminiman (Megaman 3):

I knew this was going to be the top of the list from the start and I was really trying to find another stage song to top it. But Geminiman's stage music is just amazing. Its a very catchy tune with an awesome break down. There are really no faults to this song. Its good from start to end.

+ Boss Battle Music +

I didn't want to make a big long list for this category, so I will just cut to the chase and say which one I think is the best.

#1

Megaman 3, Boss Battle:

Whenever I hear this boss music, I think of an eye of a storm. Calm in the middle of chaos. Easily the best song to beat up robot masters to.

+ End Game Stage Music +

These are those songs that we all become very familiar with in the post robot master stages. Dr. Wily, Dr. Cossak, Mr. X, Darkman, Etc. These stages usually have some of the more rememberable songs, mostly because we get them burned into our brain's from hours of frustrating play. I made a top 4 list to represent the average number of end game stages.

#4

Megaman 6, Dr. Wily Stages:

This is a rather mellow Dr. Wily song, and one of the better ones. It's a fitting tune for Megamans accent to Dr. Wily's layer.

#3

Megaman 5, Darkman Stages:

This song easily gets stuck in your head, and is easily one of the best songs in the franchise. Definitely something worth familiarizing yourself with if you don't already know it.

#2

Megaman 4, Dr. Cossak Stages 3-4:

Actually both Dr. Cossack stages have extraordinary music. However, when comparing the 2, the second act of the Cossak stage soundtrack is superior. It's definitely the best music that Megaman 4 has to offer, especially because the later Dr. Wily stages has some bland songs.

#1

Megaman 2, Dr. Wily Stages 1-2:

Expecting something from Megaman 3 perhaps? or perhaps you already saw this coming. Easily one of the best songs in the entire Megaman franchise, and I mean ENTIRE FRANCHISE! Listen to it yourself and you will see what I am talking about.

+ Dr. Wily Battle Music +

These are those special tunes for your final showdown with Dr. Wily himself... or himself and his end game bosses.  I wont make a list though because they are all generally pretty good. One however stands out from the rest.

#1

Megaman 3 Wily Battle:

Again, Megaman 3 has the best boss battle music in the franchise. This is the most chaotically epic boss battle theme ever. Enough said!

+ Prologue/Ending Music +

These are the end themes and prologues that you play your ass of to listen to. All of them are worth the time spent in playing the game as they are usually the best songs in the soundtrack. Here is my top 3.

#3

Megaman 5, Credits:

This is a cool one to listen to. It pumps you up while it sends you out on a happy note. Its a fitting end to an awesome game.

#2

Megaman 4, Prologue:

One of the slower more bitter sweet ending songs. It's an example of how well Capcom can do the blues. I can't help but feel like they are trying to recreate something great...

#1
Megaman 3, Prologue:

Also known as the Protoman Concerto, This is by far the best Megaman Prologue song. Its a beautifully bitter sweet blues song, and probably the best 8-bit song ever to be composed.

+ Overall Best Songs of Megaman +

This is my final pick for the top 3 Megaman songs on the NES. This is sort of the list that I have always had for my favorite songs, and its for a good reason.

#3

Megaman 3 Intro:

I only picked the Megaman 2 intro over this because I consider it to be a better theme song. However, I love this song more in the end. It starts out beutifully and picks up into and awesome rocking tune. I wouldn't call it Megaman's Theme Song, but its close.

#2

Megaman 2, Dr. Wily Stages 1-2:

This is the best stage music in any Megaman game ever. And that is saying a lot coming from a franchise that has one of the best 8-bit soundtracks ever. It makes the fight to Dr. Wily an epic one and really summarizes Megaman's struggle against Dr. Wily as a whole.

#1

Megaman 3 Ending:

I would be surprised if anyone thought that this wouldn't be number 1. The fact is, this is the best song to come from the NES ever. Its so different from anything else on the to come from a Megaman game. To create something so beautiful on a system with games that generally make loud rock and roll like tunes is rare indeed.

In the end, The games that really steal the show are Megaman 2 and Megaman 3. They both have amazing soundtracks that shouldn't be passed up, even if I didn't mention more songs from them. Megaman 5 and 6 also have noteworthy soundtracks, though not as solid as 2 and 3. Megaman 1 and 4 are generally considered "bottom of the barrel". though for a Megaman game, I would consider "Bottom of the Barrel" well above par. So,  in a nut shell, The entire franchise is worth listening to. As I said before. I had a hard time cutting down the list into a countdown list.

PS, I have the complete soundtrack of Megaman in my Files Section. Check them out!
